Community transport
The definition of community transport is quite broad. It generally refers to transport provided by Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS) organisations, using a combination of volunteers and paid staff.
Community transport can include Dial-A-Ride services using wheelchair accessible minibuses; village-based community car schemes - where local people use their own car to transport others for a small fee; moped and mobility scooter hire.
Who can use Community Transport?
Community Transport is for anyone, of any age, who does not have their own transport and who cannot access public transport services easily. In South Cambridgeshire, the people who use these services are generally older people, those with a disability and those who are isolated, because of the rural nature of the district. Under 16's must be accompanied by an adult.
You can also contact the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority's Community Transport Officer about your transport needs on 07874 861259.
Please note, if you, or anyone you know, would like any of the below information printed, then please email duty.communities@scambs.gov.uk or telephone us on: 01954 713070
Community Car Schemes
Community car schemes provide a highly valued service to those who would otherwise be unable to get to medical appointments, to the shops (or other services), or keep in touch with relatives and friends. Journeys are provided by voluntary drivers and are booked through a coordinator. Most community car schemes use drivers based in your village to whom you pay a per-mile rate. This keeps the cost down.
If you cannot find a scheme covering your parish or the area where you live, it is worth contacting a neighbouring scheme which may be able to help you. You would normally have to pay to cover the additional distance a vehicle would have to come to reach you.

Help With Travel Costs for Healthcare
You may be able to claim a refund under the Healthcare Travel Costs Scheme (HTCS) of the cost of travelling to hospital or other NHS premises for NHS-funded treatment or a diagnostic test arranged by a doctor or dentist. More information can be found at the NHS for England website.
NHS Non-Emergency Patient Transport
In general, patients are responsible for getting themselves to and from non-urgent NHS appointments. NHS Cambridgeshire funds patient transport in the following circumstances:
- Where the patient’s medical condition is such that they require the skills and support of Patient Transport Services staff - and where it would be detrimental to the patient’s condition or recovery if they were to travel by other means
- Where the patient’s medical condition affects their mobility so that they would not be able to access healthcare by other means
- Where the patient’s cognitive state or lack of motivation could result in non-attendance if their travel were unsupported
Further details
- One escort or carer may also travel if the patient need particular support.
- Children under the age of 16 years must be accompanied by a responsible parent or guardian.
- Patient transport is arranged through your GP surgery and is subject to eligibility.
- If an escort is required, you must let your GP know at the time of booking transport.
- If you are not eligible for patient transport, you will need to make your own travel arrangements.
Help With Travel Costs
