Sustainable living

You can help by reducing your own carbon emissions (also known as your carbon footprint). The average household produces 8 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year. We must reduce this number to 1.87 tonnes a year by 2050.

Reduce your carbon footprint

Everybody should consider their lifestyle and habits to find ways they can reduce their carbon footprint. Here are some ideas:

Collective action

Joining groups or movements to push for change.

Switching to renewable energy

This change is the most impactful way to cut down on your carbon footprint. Many energy suppliers now offer green tariffs to urge people to switch.

Recycling and reducing waste

Buy fewer things. Recycle wherever possible. Reuse things. Make a low carbon choice in what you buy, from clothes to food to energy.

Changing or cutting down on your travel

Travel creates many carbon emissions globally. If you have to fly, find out how to offset your emissions. Many airlines have this choice when buying tickets. Take a train instead of flying or take more local holidays. Walk or bike and if you can’t, use public transport. If you need to go by car, think about using an electric one.

Changing your habits at home

Change your bulbs to LEDs. Switch your appliances off at the plug. Seal off and block draft gaps. Make your home more energy efficient by learning where the heat is escaping. You can borrow thermal imaging cameras to find gaps in insulation, draughts and heating problems.
