Sustainable travel

Electric vehicles

Transport, especially cars, is a big part of our local carbon footprint. Starting in 2030, there will be a ban on selling new petrol and diesel cars.

Below are some benefits of electric vehicle (EV) charging:

  • no CO₂ exhaust emissions: EVs are better for the environment and air quality
  • cheaper fuel: Charging an EV is cheaper than buying petrol or diesel. This is especially true if you charge it at home overnight
  • lower maintenance costs: EVs have fewer moving parts than petrol cars so they need less maintenance. They are also exempt from road tax
  • good range: EVs now have an average range of 197 miles. Certain models go even further on a single charge
  • flexible fuelling: You can charge at home, work, or public charging stations.

Please read our EV charging page for more information on charging points in the district.

E-Bikes

E-bikes are a great way to travel quickly and with low carbon emissions. You can travel by e-bikes by using Cambridge Electric Transport's E-bike Service which allows you to hire e-bikes around South Cambridgeshire.

You can also buy your own e-bike. Check out the Energy Saving Trust for advice on getting your own.

Car sharing

Sharing a car when commuting can be cheaper and greener. You can join CamShare for free.

Employee Cycle Scheme

Cyclescheme is an employee benefit that saves you money on a bike and accessories. You pay nothing upfront, and the payments come from your salary tax-efficiently.
