Accidents at work
Employers, the self-employed and people in control of work premises are legally required to report certain kinds of accidents and dangerous occurrences within a workplace, commonly known as Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013 (RIDDOR).
What is RIDDOR?
RIDDOR is the law that requires reports of:
- Work-related accidents which cause death
- Work-related accidents which cause certain serious injuries
- Diagnosed cases of certain industrial diseases
- Certain dangerous occurrences (incidents with the potential to cause harm).
Examples of reportable incidents include:
- An employee breaking a bone due to a fall
- A member of the public being taken directly to hospital
- An employee having seven days or more off work due to a pulled back
- An employee developing occupational skin dermatitis
The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) have produced a brief guide to the reporting of injuries, diseases and dangerous occurrences.
Please see the HSE website for further information about reporting accidents.
