Zoo licensing
A zoo is a place where wild animals are kept to be shown to the public for more than 7 days in any 12-month period. Anyone operating a zoo will require a licence from the local authority/council, even if they are not charging fees to the public.
A new licence is usually granted for up to 4 years, renewals made after the first licence will normally run for up to 6 years (but this does not apply to circuses and pet shops).
To approve a licence we will need to consult the:
- police
- fire authority
- governing body of any national institute concerned with zoos
- another local authority if the zoo overlaps into their district
- any person wishing to object to the licence on grounds of health or safety for people living in the area
Licence conditions
The local authority shall not consider an application unless at least 2 months notice of the application had been given, plus publication of details in a local and national newspaper and notice placed at the site.
The authority must arrange an inspection of the zoo by a consultant veterinary inspector from the list of suitable nominated inspectors.
Fees
Costs vary for licence – you will need to consult with the Licensing Team to find out more.
