Kickboxing training, artisan baked goods and cycle repairs are among businesses who have received a share of £100,000 in grants from South Cambridgeshire District Council.
A total of 21 small businesses received funding through the Council’s Small Business Grant Scheme, funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
The grants of up to £5,000 each helped sole traders and small enterprises innovate, improve sustainability and unlock new opportunities. Among the businesses to benefit are:
Kickboxing Cambridge at Babraham – assault runner trainer equipment enabling specialised training sessions, particularly useful during bad weather, ensuring consistent activity options through the year. With the growth of Kickboxing and Hyrox competition teams, the treadmill is essential for training local competitors, especially for the demanding running element of Hyrox.
Cambridge Cycle Surgery at Waterbeach – A sustainable collection trailer for two bikes and specialist tooling for workshops. The tooling has expanded capability in types of repairs, increasing competitiveness and improving customer experience. The trailer means the business is less reliant on vehicle transport (by approximately 90%) which is positive for the environment.
Northstowe Tap and Social - Outdoor bar equipment including a gazebo, a draught drinks dispenser, soup kettle, generator and festoon lights. The equipment allows the business to attend outdoor events and festivals. It is used at a market at the venue on the first Sunday of the month.
Avenue Farm Food Park Elsworth – A marquee for community events and markets in the open courtyard. It is also used as an extension to the outdoor seating area at the Workshop Café and will be used for the new weekly park run. Alongside other existing gazebos, there are plans for events to include open studios and weekend events.
Webbsour Bakery at Elsworth – A Rationale bakery oven and commercial bread slicer machine, which can perform multiple tasks within one unit with the benefit of increased productivity and speed for their organic artisan sour dough breads.
Sweetie Factory at Papworth Everard - Website development, an online shop, and digital marketing. Sales have since increased, including high-profile orders such as 1,000 bespoke biscuits for a Squid Game influencer event with Netflix and a project for Scottish Widows. The new shop means online engagement continues to grow, freeing up focus time on new opportunities.
The Beauty Cabin in Cambourne – Two portable infrared LED machines delivering targeted light therapy to treat a range of skin concerns, including acne and inflammation.·
Cllr Peter McDonald, Lead Cabinet Member for Economic Development for South Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “It’s fantastic to see how this funding is helping small businesses across South Cambridgeshire to grow and thrive. Supporting local enterprise boosts the economy and strengthens our communities, creates opportunities, and develops a sense of pride and connection. When local businesses succeed, everyone benefits.”
South Cambridgeshire District Council received £100,000 from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund to support small businesses in the district with grants during the 2024-25 financial year. The grants helped fund a wide range of growth activities, including website and brand development, marketing, staff training, equipment purchases, electric vehicles, and premises improvements. Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority (CPCA) is the lead authority for delivery of the Fund, while the District Council is responsible for grant scheme delivery and allocation. The grants were for capital projects only.
